Since launching the Darius’s Law petition, this movement continues to gain momentum and bring national attention to a critical gap in Canada’s emergency Amber Alert system.

This advocacy continues to reach new audiences across the country through this weeks coverage and interviews with Global News National, QR Calgary AM, Bridge City News, and CTV News Calgary. These conversations have helped amplify the message that Canada’s current Amber Alert framework requires modernization and that families should not have to wait for a legislative exemption or proof of an abduction before police have the ability to act.

What makes Darius’s Law unique is its focus on a broader national solution. While there are important conversations underway about creating additional alert categories for missing children — Darius’s Law seeks to address the larger systemic issue.

This petition calls on federal and provincial governments to come together and develop a coordinated national strategy that modernizes Canada’s emergency alert framework and brings it in line with best practices already used across North America and Europe.

The goal is not simply to create another category of alert, but to ensure police have the discretion and tools needed to respond effectively when credible risk factors exist and a vulnerable person may be in immediate danger.

The issue is not creating more categories of alerts — the issue is ensuring law enforcement has the discretion to act when credible risk factors exist. A child’s vulnerability, the circumstances surrounding their disappearance, geographic factors, and the potential for immediate danger should all be considered when determining whether an emergency alert is warranted.

Darius’s Law also addresses concerns about alert fatigue by ensuring that the decision remains with trained law enforcement professionals. This is not a system where every missing person automatically triggers an emergency alert. Instead, police would retain the authority to evaluate each situation and determine when the public’s assistance is necessary to protect a vulnerable individual.

Across the United States, Mexico, and many European jurisdictions, emergency alert systems have evolved to recognize that risk does not always begin with confirmed abduction. Canada must move toward a more responsive, risk-based approach that empowers police to act when circumstances indicate a credible threat to safety.

The purpose of Darius’s Law is simple: give law enforcement the tools they need to protect vulnerable children and individuals when time is critical. A missing person does not need to fit the narrow definition of proof of a confirmed abduction to be in immediate danger.

Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared, and supported this movement. The momentum behind Darius’s Law demonstrates that Canadians believe our Amber Alert system can be stronger, faster, and more responsive.

The conversation has been reignited — and now is the time to keep building awareness.

If you support Darius’s Law, consider helping amplify this movement by making a small contribution of $10 or $20 through Change.org’s support options. These contributions help Change.org promote this petition, increase visibility, and bring this crucial issue like this to a wider audience.
