Today marks a significant moment in our fight to protect vulnerable missing children.

The Government of Alberta granted a special legislative exemption to the Calgary Police Service, allowing them to use the Emergency Broadcast System to issue an Amber Alert for a vulnerable missing child, despite the case not strictly meeting the current requirement of a confirmed abduction.

This is exactly the issue this petition identified and why we need legislative change now!

When six-year-old Darius MacDougall disappeared near the Alberta-B.C. border, no Amber Alert was issued because investigators could not immediately prove an abduction had occurred. Since then, thousands of Canadians have joined our movement, calling for a common-sense change that would allow police to issue alerts when a child is believed to be at serious risk, even if proof of an abduction has not yet been established.

Today's decision demonstrates something important: our government is listening.

While this exemption is not yet the permanent legislative change we have been advocating for, it is clear evidence that decision-makers recognize there are circumstances where the current system is too restrictive and that vulnerable children may require immediate public notification before all the facts are known.

This is a major step forward.

For months, supporters of Darius's Law have been told that the current rules could not be changed or that exceptions were not possible. Today proves otherwise. Alberta has shown that flexibility exists when a child's safety is at stake.

Now we must turn this moment into lasting change.

Police should not have to request a special exemption every time a vulnerable child goes missing under suspicious or high-risk circumstances. They should have the authority to act immediately when there are reasonable grounds to believe a child is in danger.

The United States and Mexico already provide law enforcement with greater discretion to issue alerts for at-risk missing children. Alberta has now demonstrated that this approach can work here as well.

This petition helped bring attention to this issue. The media coverage, public support, and more than 19,000 voices demanding reform have helped push this conversation into the public spotlight. Together, we have built momentum that cannot be ignored.

But our work is not finished.
