Strengthen animal cruelty laws in Ireland
The Issue
After being stolen from outside his home by two males on an e-scooter, Felix was eventually found after a week and reunited with his family. He was suffering from horrific injuries, including a broken jaw and severe neglect. Tragically, his injuries were so extensive that he had to be euthanised.
His story has devastated animal lovers across Ireland and sparked widespread anger and heartbreak. But Felix's case is about more than one animal. It has highlighted growing public concern that animal cruelty, neglect, and pet theft are not being treated with the urgency they deserve.
For many families, pets are not possessions. They are companions, friends, and cherished members of the family. The suffering endured by Felix and the devastation experienced by his owners should never happen again.
Animal welfare organisations continue to receive thousands of complaints every year relating to cruelty, neglect, abandonment, and mistreatment of animals. Despite existing legislation, many people believe that penalties remain too weak, prosecutions are too rare, and enforcement agencies lack the resources necessary to properly investigate and prevent these crimes.
We are calling on the Irish Government and elected representatives to take immediate action by:
Strengthening penalties for animal cruelty, torture, and neglect.
Recognising pet theft as a distinct and serious criminal offence.
Increasing funding and resources for animal welfare inspectors and enforcement agencies.
Improving cooperation between An Garda Síochána, local authorities, and animal welfare organisations.
Establishing faster investigation and prosecution processes for serious animal welfare offences.
Ensure that appropriate legal consequences are applied to individuals under the age of 18 who engage in serious acts of animal cruelty, while reviewing current protections around anonymity to ensure that the welfare of animals and accountability for offenders are adequately addressed.
Launching national public awareness campaigns encouraging the reporting of animal cruelty and suspicious activity.
Reviewing current legislation to ensure it adequately protects companion animals and acts as a genuine deterrent to offenders.
Felix's suffering cannot be undone, but his story can be the catalyst for meaningful change.
By signing this petition, you are sending a clear message that animal cruelty has no place in Ireland and that stronger protections are needed for the animals who depend on us.
Please sign and share this petition so that Felix's story is never forgotten and so that no other family has to endure the same heartbreak.
Justice for Felix. Stronger protections for animals. Action now.
