Madison #1 Middle School located in Phoenix on 16th Street between Missouri Avenue and Bethany Home Road has an outstanding student safety issue. Currently there is no place for students to cross 16th Street anywhere between Missouri and Bethany Home. This has caused students to attempt unsafe crossing to avoid the long walk which has resulted in students being struck and injured by cars. The most recent incident was in January 2026.

A simple fix would be to install a HAWK light to provide safety and slow traffic that speeds along this 6 lane arterial road. A pedestrian crossing study has been conducted and the intersection at 16th Street and San Miguel Avenue met the conditions for a HAWK light. However, the location was NOT SELECTED! The location remains on the City of Phoenix's Street Transportation Department list and will be reviewed again in June 2026
