Streams Matter: Limit Radio Weighting on the Billboard Hot 100

Streams Matter: Limit Radio Weighting on the Billboard Hot 100
The Issue
Independent and emerging artists are disproportionately harmed by Billboard’s current chart methodology, which gives radio airplay extreme influence over the Hot 100. Acts with significant support are much more likely to secure radio slots. On the other hand, smaller and/or unsigned artists are forced to rely on streaming and digital engagement to gain listeners.
If this system remains unchanged, the Hot 100 will continue to reflect the artist’s industry power over true listener demand. This will discourage innovation, shut out new talent, and limit the cultural relevance of charts. A fairer weighting system would ensure that the Hot 100 demonstrates what people are actually listening to and gives artists the visibility they’ve earned.
Streaming has become the dominant way listeners discover and consume music, yet the Hot 100 has not been accurately reflecting this shift. The charts should evolve to reflect how fans engage with music today, not yesterday. Adjusting the weighting of radio now is critical to restore fairness, support rising artists, and keep
