#STOPTED Leonsis from Relocating Washington, D.C.'s Beloved Sports Teams

The Issue

Please sign this petition urging Ted Leonsis not to relocate our beloved Wizards and Capitals out of Washington D.C. If by Jan. 10th, Mr. Leonsis  continues to disrupt our lives with his poorly considered relocation plans, we invite our affected friends in the region to join us in launching a boycott of Monumental Sports.

For decades, we, the residents of the DMV, have poured our hearts, minds, and finances into supporting the Washington Wizards and Capitals. We've stood by these teams through thick and thin, cheering them on in their victories and standing by them in their defeats. These teams are more than just sports franchises to us; they show the world our scrappiness, our resilience, our soul, our spirit.

The billionaire owner of these teams, Ted Leonsis, wants to rip them away from their current home in the heart of DC--with central access to the entire DMV--and set up shop in suburban Virginia. This plan would send the  region's transportation infrastructure into chaos. Pathways to Reagan Airport will be in shambles. This move destroys the quality of life for those of us who live in Alexandria Va.

It detonates a bomb on the diverse creative economy that has been built around these teams downtown. It leaves behind a despicable trail of broken promises to Southeast DC--home of our prized Mystics.

We're used to people dismissing DC as merely a political hub with no real culture or statehood. We know better. We understand that our region is a blend of cultures with its own unique identity - an identity that is deeply intertwined with our beloved sports teams.

Mr. Leonsis' decision isn't just about relocating sports franchises; it's about abandoning a community that has supported him throughout his tenure as team owner - an act of betrayal of Monumental proportions.

We urge Mr. Leonsis to reconsider this move and stick with the city that has stuck with him through wins and losses alike. Let us continue building on what we've started here in DC together.

Any possible move to the suburbs would be years away.  In the meantime, we promise to treat Mr. Leonsis' business exactly the same way he decides to treat us. Partners, if you want to join us, please email info@dontmutedc.com for more information.
