Dear supporters,

The final working party report has been published. The group comprised of 12 cherry-picked members of the Community and Councillors. This was part of the scoping process to explore the pros and cons of World Heritage Status for Glastonbury.

Unfortunately the results appear to be very biased in favour of persuing the next stage of World Heritage Status.

They claim in the report that there would only be a modest increase in Tourism, which is not the case if we look at the case worldwide. Furthermore they claim that World Heritage Status would increase the wellbeing of local residents. Many research studies suggest the opposite. The book 'a future in Ruins' by Lynn Meskell outlines many of the problems with UNESCO worldwide .

The report claims there was engagement with the local community. There was little or no engagement. The consultations were more like publicity stunts. When we expressed our views in Council meetings etc or sent emails to the Consultants there was little response.

The report mentions the anti-social aspect of the residents of Glastonbury, including the Jester speaking in one of the meetings. They site this as one of the problems in Glastonbury which may prevent WHS inscription. The public participation in Council meetings  is no longer recorded for You Tube and the public were not permitted to speak at the working party meetings.

Another finding by the Working party is linking WHS inscription to climate change action. This makes no sense whatsoever.
