Recent Coverage: BuzzFeed and More!

Hi everyone! I'm pleased to share that over the past couple of weeks there has been some great coverage about this petition and the growing number of people concerned about the use of Plus, Husky, and Slim labels for kids' clothing. The first piece was by BuzzFeed, which featured moms, including me, who have come across these labels and found them unacceptable. (https://www.buzzfeed.com/leticiamiranda/these-moms-are-angry-that-old-navy-and-gap-call-kids-husky-a) We are definitely not alone! BuzzFeed also reached out to more experts for feedback. Vinita Menon, clinical psychologist and psychology instructor at Northern Illinois University, said, "Children who are overweight or obese are more vulnerable to body image and body esteem issues as well as psychological concerns. Labeling of clothing that may be perceived as judgmental or pejorative has the potential to contribute to these concerns." And Bryn Austin, a professor of social and behavioral science at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said, "What would be better is if we didn’t employ these methods of discrimination and shaming that create higher and lower statuses in community. How about we just have children be treated equal?" Couldn't agree more! A second piece, by Hot Moms Club (ha!), covered the petition specifically: "This Mom Thinks That the Way We Size Kid's Clothes Is Body-Shaming Them."
