Stop using our tax money to buy diesel fuel from Russia
The Issue
Ever since I learned about the crisis escalating in Ukraine and the role that fossil fuel sales play in financing international conflicts, I have become increasingly concerned about where our money is going. Every hard-earned penny that is deducted from our paychecks in taxes should serve to improve our community, our country, and reflect our values. It simply doesn’t sit right with me that our tax money could be used to purchase diesel from Russia, potentially funding a regime engaging in practices not aligned with our democratic values of peace and freedom.
The war in Ukraine, fueled by such funding streams, has led to tremendous human suffering, displacement, and global instability. It's estimated that European countries import billions worth of fossil fuels from Russia, inadvertently supporting their aggressive military actions (IEA, 2022). It's imperative that we act to change this policy and redirect our financial resources towards sustainable energy and peace-promoting initiatives.
Our government has the capability to diversify our energy sources and invest in renewable energy sectors. Countries like Germany and Denmark have shown it's possible to significantly reduce reliance on non-renewable imports through government-led transitions to solar, wind, and other renewables (Schreuer, 2023).
By signing this petition, you are demanding that our government re-evaluate its fuel purchasing policies. We need immediate measures that prevent our tax money from supporting regimes contrary to our values and security interests. We are insisting on a commitment to transparency in energy expenditure and a logical move towards cleaner, self-sustaining energy sources.
Act now by signing this petition so we can work towards redirecting our taxes in ways that build a more peaceful and sustainable future. Your signature is crucial in showing politicians that we elect those who reflect our values and morals, not just when it's easy, but especially when it matters the most.
