Stop using Bamboo for Scaffolding in Hong Kong

Stop using Bamboo for Scaffolding in Hong Kong
The Issue
On November 26, 2025, a disaster struck Hong Kong that left a deep scar in our community. Seven complex buildings were engulfed in flames, resulting in a heartbreaking tragedy with 44 confirmed deaths and 279 people still missing. This horrendous incident has amplified the urgent need to critically reassess our current construction practices, particularly the use of bamboo scaffolding, which poses substantial risks to public safety.
Bamboo has been used for scaffolding in Hong Kong for centuries due to its economical benefits and ease of use. However, in modern times, safety must take precedence over tradition. Bamboo scaffolding is vulnerable to fire hazards, susceptible to structural weaknesses, and does not meet the rigorous safety standards required by today's urban environments.
There is a dire need for a transition to safer, more reliable scaffolding materials that are less prone to accidents during unforeseen calamities. Alternatives such as steel or aluminum scaffolding are more fire-resistant, provide better load-bearing capacity, and are widely recognized for their enhanced safety features in construction globally.
We urge the Hong Kong government to recognize the catastrophic consequences of continuing outdated practices and to enact regulations that mandate the use of modern scaffolding materials. Implementing such measures is critical to prevent future tragedies and to protect the lives of both construction workers and residents.
Sign this petition to demand immediate action from our authorities and to push for reforms that will safeguard our city's future. The cost of inertia is too great; let's advocate for change that ensures a safer environment for everyone in Hong Kong.
