Stop Unnecessary Jail Deaths in Hennepin County
The Issue
On July 21, 2022, Lucas Bellamy died at the Hennepin County Jail due to gross indifference to his suffering from Hennepin County Jail and Hennepin County Medical Center staff. Since 2015, more detainees have died at the Jail than at any other detention center in Minnesota over the same span of time.
Each one of these human beings was someone’s beloved, someone’s child or parent, someone’s sibling or spouse. They are not numbers. They are not chattel. They are endowed with civil and human rights that must be upheld, always. These rights are inalienable. These rights were transgressed.
Please sign the petition to demand that lawmakers conduct an independent investigation of Hennepin County, rather than permitting the County to investigate itself.
Your signature will save lives.

To the Congresspeople of the State of Minnesota, the City Council Members and Mayors of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Attorney General of the State of Minnesota, and to Governor Walz,
We, fellow human beings and members of a connected and caring community, who are ourselves endowed with certain inalienable rights, are outraged to see the civil and human rights of Lucas Bellamy callously disregarded. We are outraged by what we have witnessed, the incontrovertible proof of his suffering, illness, and death on July 21, 2022.
We demand a Federal investigation of Lucas’ case, and into the patterns and practices of Hennepin County Jail and Hennepin County Medical Center, who have presided over the highest rate of inmate deaths in Minnesota.
We will not see our tax dollars support such indefensible behavior. This cannot go unanswered.
We demand action and accountability. We stand with the Bellamy Family in their fight for justice for Lucas. We stand for the protection of the civil and human rights of every child and adult who intersects with the correctional system.
In solidarity,
[the undersigned: Full Name, District, State]
