Stop Unilateral Cancellation of Joint Tenancy Agreements Without Consent

The Issue

Recently, my son experienced the devastating consequences of a loophole in our tenancy laws. He was abruptly made homeless after his partner and joint tenant, without any prior discussion or his consent, terminated their tenancy agreement. This occurred just after the ending of their relationship, which triggered a painful battle for him to retain his home while unknowingly competing with potential tenants for his own living space. Despite his appeals, his words fell on deaf ears. The situation compelled him to move out, causing him immeasurable stress, confusion, and shock—all while maintaining full-time employment. His mental health has suffered greatly as a result.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. There is an urgent need to change the law as many people in the UK experience similar situations each year. According to the English Housing Survey 2018/19, 11.5% of all forms of homelessness are caused by the end of an informal tenancy agreement.

This alarming statistic proves how important it is that we address this issue now. That's why we're asking for your support to make it illegal for one person in a joint tenancy to cancel the agreement without the consent of the other party(s). This simple change could protect thousands from becoming homeless each year.

By signing this petition, you're helping to prevent anyone from experiencing the sudden and devastating loss of their home again. Stand with us to ensure equality and safety in tenancy laws. Please sign this petition today. Thank you.
