Stop Unfair Rental Increases and Prevent Homelessness

Stop Unfair Rental Increases and Prevent Homelessness
The Issue
Many of our community residents, some disabled and elderly, have been living here for over three decades. Alongside facing financial implications due to the increase in the cost of living, while electric, food, water, gas, diesel prices continue to exceed living wages. Places for people are now forcing people into financial hardship and escalating the housing and homelessness crisis. Despite these challenges, we now face a new crisis: our housing associations are surreptitiously changing tenancy agreements to private letting arrangements. This allows them to augment rents to market value, even though these are social housing homes, in excess of 20% rent increases each year. These unethical practices are forcing residents into homelessness by creating rent arrears and leaving residents petrified of eviction. Furthermore, our most vulnerable residents are becoming distressed and anxious due to this precarious situation. Unfortunately, organizations like Shelter and Citizens Advice cannot provide legal advice due to capacity overload. Phone lines are unavailable unless you face impending eviction, and there's a lack of accessible legal representation. The system is strongly biased, as solicitors often only represent landlords, and tenants are required to front £10,000 for representation. In pressing times like these, we must rally to protect our neighbors and our homes. It is imperative that housing associations are held accountable for their unscrupulous practices. Let's demand transparency in rental procedures and enact a freeze on rent increases, upholding the principles of social housing. We implore you to sign this petition to stop unfair rental increases, changes to tenancy terms and conditions and prevent further homelessness.
