Stop Unfair Dress Coding at T.F. South High School!
The Issue
As a student at T.F. South in Lansing, IL, I have personally experienced and witnessed the negative effects of unfair dress code policy enforcement within our school. It is disheartening to witness the unequal treatment of students based on their gender or personal style choices.
It is only the first school day and already dozens of students were unfairly dress coded. It is also clear that this enforcement is only targeted toward the female population within the school. As they walked into their lunch period, if girls were showing any stomach at all and it couldn't be covered and stay covered, they were told to either call a parent and ask them to bring a new shirt or wear another person's lost or forgotten gym uniform which the school simply claimed which is completely unsanitary. Girls who were simply wearing crop tops but not showing any stomach were told the same. Meanwhile, boys in the school can wear tanks, crop tops, or even no shirts at all and face no such consequences. The regulations they do claim affect the boys as well aren't enforce nearly as harshly.
When the students entered school and staff saw they were dressed incorrectly, male staff were sent to check classrooms in search of "nude-ies". This term was used to reference students dressed incorrectly, not only is it inappropriate for male teachers to be conducted these searches when it is clear who their looking for (female students), but it is disturbing for any staff member or adult to be referring to a minor that way. Implying that a student is nude for wear a short top, shorts, or a skirt in 90-100 degree weather is extremely wrong.
Girls are also dress coded for things they cannot control about their bodies such as bigger hips or chest that fill clothes differently. Are these students expected to only wear baggy clothes that don’t outline any of there features? This unfair treatment has got to stop, for too long girls have been told that their shoulders, stomachs or thighs were distracting and made to feel unsafe. They should not be forced to compensate for students or staff who find it so hard to focus on learning or teaching because of body parts that most of the general population have.
