The Issue

As a community committed to justice, equality, and true progress, we call on UC Berkeley to sever all ties with Greek life organizations on campus. In 2025, our university received a staggering 735 reports of sexual misconduct, an alarming reflection of the unsafe environment perpetuated by these institutions. Yet, only 20 individuals faced disciplinary actions—an appallingly low number given the severity and volume of allegations. This demonstrates an institutional failure to protect students. These encounters are often underreported, meaning 735 is likely a fraction of the sexual misconduct events that occur on our campus.

In light of the recent events at Cornell—where Greek life perpetuated similar patterns of misconduct and lack of accountability—it's evident that these organizations do not align with the values UC Berkeley claims to hold dear.

Greek organizations continue to be bastions of misogyny, racism, classism, and ableism. By supporting these groups, we signal a disregard for the safety and dignity of every student on campus. The constant threat of victim-blaming and failure to take reports seriously only exacerbate the issue, discouraging survivors from coming forward and further endangering our community.

The core mission of UC Berkeley has always been driven by a commitment to social change and innovation. However, as long as these problematic institutions are associated with our campus, that mission is compromised.

We must take definitive action to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students. By banning Greek life, UC Berkeley can set a precedent for campuses nationwide, demonstrating an unwavering dedication to student welfare and justice.

Please join us in advocating for what is right. Sign this petition to urge UC Berkeley to sever ties with Greek life and stand as a true beacon of social justice.
