I am one of many dependent on Uber's services for commuting and food deliveries on account of my disability. Like many others, I am on a fixed income and cannot afford the drastic increases in fare during certain times, sometimes even doubling or tripling the usual rates. Uber's supposed "discounts" offered through their monthly subscription service, Uber One, provide little relief when price inflation drastically outweighs any savings. On rainy days, an Uber Eats delivery can charge anywhere between $17- $25, often costing more than the meal itself. Such price hikes are not only unjust but exploitative, falling heavily on those who cannot opt out of these services owing to their circumstances.

Even during holidays, when spending is already high, Uber's prices surge exorbitantly. It is clear that there is a dire need for regulatory oversight to ensure these erratic and inflated charges are kept in check. For those of us who use these services not as a luxury, but a necessity, this scrutiny is not just important but crucial.

The effect of these price fluctuations extends beyond me. Many who are on disability or other fixed incomes are similarly affected, leading to a widespread call for action to ease the burden these costs impose on us. Let's take a stand against this unfair practice. Uber needs to be held responsible for these exploitative rates and more robust oversight of their fare structure policies needs to be put in place.
