Stop Trump's Taxpayer-Funded Political Ads and Return the Stolen $20 Million

The Issue

Since September, TV ads paid for with federal money have been running nationwide. They praise President Donald Trump and repeat his campaign message, and they’re airing while voters cast early ballots for the November midterms. President Trump should pull these ads now and pay back every taxpayer dollar spent on them.

The ads have already cost more than $12 million in airtime, according to the media tracking firm AdImpact. A total of $20 million has been drawn from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to cover them. That money was part of a package Congress approved for immigration enforcement, not for promoting a politician.

The pushback has come from both parties. The President called the spots “positive promotion for our Great U.S.A.,” according to the Associated Press, and said his super PAC would cover the cost going forward. Yet the very next day, a new ad began running labeled “paid for by the U.S. Government,” the AP reported. He also has not committed to repaying the money already spent.

Legal experts say the ads may break a federal law that bans agencies from spending money from Congress on publicity or propaganda. Unlike typical public service announcements, these ads don’t help people sign up for benefits or use a government program. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has sued to stop them, but court cases take time, and Election Day is only weeks off.

Public money is not a campaign fund, no matter which party holds the White House. President Trump, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and DHS should take the ads off the air, repay what has been spent, and send the full $20 million back to the purpose Congress set.
