The Issue

My son has attended this District 75 school for children with special needs in the Bronx for the past three years. Recently, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) buses have been authorized to take photos of our license plates and issue tickets to cars parked in front of the school. As a result, I received $300 worth of fines through four tickets without even realizing I was violating any rules. Our intention is solely to drop off and pick up our children safely, yet we are punished for doing so.

Many other parents are facing the same predicament. Parking around the corner or blocks away is not only inconvenient but can also be unsafe for our children. Special needs students, like my son, may be at risk of running away or becoming distressed when transitions are not smooth and predictable. This situation makes it extremely challenging to provide the care and attention our children need.

We propose the designation of a special lane in front of the school, allowing parents a safe space to park while facilitating drop-offs and pick-ups. This request is not only reasonable but crucial for the safety and well-being of our children.

The implementation of a designated lane would significantly ease the stress on families, ensuring the safety of our children and preventing unnecessary punitive measures against parents. This change is vital for upholding our children's right to a safe and supportive educational environment.

Join us in urging the local authorities and the MTA to address this pressing issue. Sign this petition to advocate for the installation of a special parking lane for parents and caregivers at this District 75 school PS 160 x 168 at 4140 Hutchinson River Pkwy E in the Bronx. Help us ensure our children receive the safe drop-off and pick-up conditions they deserve.
