The Issue

4 June 2026

Fiji officially rejected the proposed $1.4 billion Vuda waste-to-energy plant.

The government blocked the development—which was backed by Australian developers—over concerns about imported waste, lack of landowner consent, and potential damage to the environment and eco-tourism.

Details of the rejected proposal and its aftermath include:

●The Proposal: Developers sought to build an 80MW incinerator and private port at Vuda Point to burn rubbish, which they claimed would supply \(40\%\) of Fiji's electricity needs.

●The Concerns: Locals, environmental groups, and tourism operators strongly opposed the project. Critics, including the Fiji Labour Party, argued it amounted to "waste colonialism" and risked turning the island into the "Pacific's ashtray".

●The Decision: The Ministry of Environment rejected the Environmental Impact Assessment. Permanent Secretary Dr Sivendra Michael stated the developers could not lawfully demonstrate how they would import waste, lacked landowner approval, and could not prove the electricity would be cheaper.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka supported the rejection to protect Fiji's environmental laws.

●Alternative Approaches: Grassroots recyclers and organizations like the Pacific Recycling Foundation continue to champion locally-led, circular-economy solutions. The country is currently executing a broader $2 billion strategy to transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2035 via solar, hydro, and wind projects.

Stop the Proposed TNG Waste-to-Energy INCINERATOR in Saweni/Vuda,

" WE  say   NO "

🇫🇯🌺  PROTECT OUR HERITAGE COAST — VUDA–SAWENI 🌺🇫🇯

Our coastline is under threat.

A waste-to-energy plant is being proposed in the heart of Saweni/Vuda, right beside:
✔ Saweni Beach
✔ Vuda Marina
✔ First Landing Resort
✔️ Nila Resort
✔️ Landers Bay Resort
✔ Dreketi Inlet

This is a residential and tourism zone, not an industrial dumping ground.

In order to run the 80Mw Incinerator they need to burn 900 000 tons of waste .  Fiji has only 200 000 non recycled wet waste and even if it all could be burned, 700 000 tons of waste will have to be IMPORTED!!!

We are here to say:

🚫 NOT HERE
🚫 NOT NEXT TO OUR BEACHES
🚫 NOT IN OUR BACKYARDS

🚫 TOURISM NOT TRASH

🌊 Join us as we protect our homes, our children, our tourism future, and our coastline.
