Stop the Virginia cell phone policy/Change the policy petition
The Issue
As a student in Virginia, we find ourselves subjected to policies that treat us alike to kindergartners. The prohibition of cellphone use during non-instructional periods such as lunch or free time fails to acknowledge the integral role technology plays in our daily lives. today, responsible device use is fundamental to development.
Research indicates that the advantages of allowing cellphones for recreational purposes can outweigh the disadvantages. A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that moderate digital technology use is not linked to increased mental health issues, while a report from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) confirms no conclusive evidence linking moderate cellphone use to significant health problems! there is too many conflicting infomation and not a lot of facts and Research. Banning cell phone use and personal laptop use during school AND AFTER school hours inside the building IS NOT THE ANSWER to supporting our mental health
Virginia's previous policy, driven by Executive Order 33, mandated a strict bell-to-bell restriction on cellphones, including non-instructional periods like lunch, and possibly after school hours.
Restricting cellphone access can be especially detrimental to students, who often use their devices for productivity and communication purposes. Phones enable students to stay organized with digital planners, access academic resources.
Stopping this cell phone ban will help us stay in touch with our families, use helpful resources for learning, and work better on projects and even let us listen to music when we study!
Easing restrictions on cellphone use during non-instructional times would demonstrate respect for our ability to manage our own behavior, thereby contributing to a healthier and more respectful school atmosphere. We urge Virginia policymakers to continue revising cellphone policies to reflect modern educational realities and promote balanced technology use. By signing petition the we're showing that we want to use technology responsibly and make OUR classrooms better places FOR US to learn.
Banning school phones is not an answer to improving mental health.
