Violence against healthcare workers has reached alarming levels. As evidenced by recent incidents at hospitals in Florida and Pennsylvania, it is becoming more and more common for healthcare professionals to experience violence while at work – a scary reality. 

Startling statistics reveal the severity of the issue: healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than other workers. Nearly half of all nurses report physical violence, and 68% face verbal abuse. The mental toll is significant as well, with 85% of workers reporting anxiety and 81% experiencing burnout.

As someone who leads a team of 50 nurses with backgrounds in various clinical settings, I conducted an informal poll and found that more than 80% had encountered workplace violence during their careers. 

It is time for our elected officials to pass a bill to make assaulting or intimidating healthcare workers a federal offense, similar to protections for flight crews.

We need stronger protections for those who care for us all. Together, let’s call on Congress to act now to protect our healthcare workers.
