The Issue

The current grade conversion of International Baccalaureate (IB) to Norwegian Grades for IB students does not have a fair distribution, and does not take into consideration the level of rigour the program has for its students.

In 2023, a total grade of 42 points in the IB curriculum is the equivalent of a 59.3 in the Norwegian Curriculum. From 2025 onwards, 42 points is set to equal a grade 55.8 in the Norwegian program. The grades are set to be even more devalued.

A 42 indicates that the IB Student has achieved 7/7 in all six of their subjects. Even so, this does not measure up to the full points that can be achieved in the Norwegian system which is 60 points.

The association of Norwegian IB Schools (NIBS) have attempted to change this, and have been unsuccessful. We students have decided to take this matter into our own hands. We ask for a more fair conversion between the IB and Norwegian grades that would allow for any student to have a equal prospect of attending a Norwegian university, regardless of their high school curriculum.

The official grade conversion can be found here: https://www.samordnaopptak.no/info/utenlandsk_utdanning/ib/poengberegning/
