The Issue

Ash Memorial Cemetery, first established in the late 1890s and still operating today, is under a significant threat. The cemetery, nestled in Sandy Spring, MD, is an irreplaceable part of our history, representing one of the oldest historically enslaved and free communities in Montgomery County. It has been a final resting place, exclusively serving the families of Sandy Spring for over a century, protecting the memory and legacy of our ancestors and loved ones.

Yet, this sacred ground is under attack. A family living at the rear of the cemetery, displaying no ties or respect for Sandy Spring, has been found disregarding cease and desist notices. They have removed 'No trespassing' signs, disturbed grave markers, and erected barriers on cemetery premises, in an attempt to forcibly claim the cemetery land as their own.

With years of struggle against such acts of blatant disrespect towards our ancestors and a seeming lack of understanding of our land's historical significance, we are at a point of potential irreversible harm. Ash Memorial Cemetery is more than a burial ground; it's a crucial part of our town's history, our culture, and individual identities.

We implore every passionate and concerned individual, especially Sandy Spring's residents and descendants, to take a stand and protect our past from fading into oblivion. Let's affirm the sanctity of the cemetery grounds and prevent the encroachment of its boundaries. Join us in demanding that the local authorities take immediate action against these offences and safeguard the Ash Memorial Cemetery.

Please sign this petition to help us uphold our heritage and protect the Ash Memorial Cemetery. Respect and preservation of history are invaluable for us and generations to come.
