STOP THE TORTURE OF HOMEWORK

The Issue

Here's a little history.

Roberto Nevilis invented homework in 1905 ( or 1095 ) as a form of PUNISHMENT who didn't demonstrate a good understanding of the lesson or were just flat out being a bad student. A PUNISHMENT!

Homework was originally a punishment, but now it is handed out like you could do it in 5 minutes! I bet it's not just me either getting 2 hours of homework from every darn class.

IMPACTS OF HOMEWORK

The mindset is a very fragile place, anyone can crack under enough pressure. I believe I speak for every student when I say homework is just too much for our brains. We wake up bright and early every morning and go to school for 8 hours for 5 days a week. WE DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO AT HOME. We already spend enough time in school, and if you're like me and have 3 hours of practice, WHAT TIME TO OURSELVES DO WE EVEN HAVE?? We might have a right to an education, but shouldn't we have a right to family time? Time to relax? Any time to not be a robot that just does work?

Oh yeah, and did I mention the mental effects of homework?

According to Stanford Children's Research Center, people who are given an excessive amount of homework are noticeably different from people who don't. The effects of homework range from stress, headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss and stomach problems, to psycho-social effects like dropping activities, not seeing friends and losing interest in hobbies. That's a lot, isn't it? Also, according to the University of Michigan School of Public Health, up to 44% of students show signs of depression.

DEAR TEACHERS,

What did you get a degree for? To sit there on your butt and assign work? To not teach anything and yet expect students to excel in their work? We NEED instruction. We NEED direction. You always assign us homework right?? WHAT AM I HERE FOR??!! I come to school every single day, expecting to learn SOMETHING. But yet, I come to school tired, and leave with even more work to do.

IN CONCLUSION,

Homework should be banned all across this country. It is unfair and cruel and I would dare say it is child labor. This is about more than banning homework, it is about the wellbeing of our future generations. We don't want a generation of people that have all creativity and imagination drained out of their being, do we? So I will end this with a simple question, How do you want to spend the very little time you have not in school? Doing homework, or spending time with the family or friends that won't be around forever?
