Stop the split - One Gloucestershire! Say NO to a rich/poor split, two unitary councils!
The Issue
Council changes - One Gloucestershire or Two?!?
Do you want to see Gloucestershire carved up in two, between rich and poorer areas?!
In December 2024 the current Labour Government issues it’s white paper on devolution. The consequence of this is that the following councils will close:
- Gloucester City Council
- Forest of Dean District Council
- Stroud District Council
- Tewkesbury Borough Council
- Cotswold District Council
- Cheltenham Borough Council
- Gloucestershire County Council and will all be replaced by a unitary authority.
It now appears, bizarrely, that 5/7 local MPs across Gloucestershire don’t want that - but would rather carve Gloucestershire in two, creating two separate rich and poor authorities (East & West) The five MPs behind this ludicrous proposal are:
- Alex McIntyre - Gloucester (Labour)
- Matt Bishop - Forest of Dean (Labour)
- Simon Opher - Stroud (Labour)
- Roz Savage - South Cotswolds (Liberal Democrats)
- Max Wilkinson - Cheltenham (Liberal Democrats)
The remaining two Gloucestershire MPs Cameron Thomas - Tewkesbury (Liberal Democrats) and Geoffrey Clifton Brown - North Cotswolds (Conservative) are AGAINST this proposal.
Splitting up Gloucestershire in this way is divisive and totally illogical. It was the Labour government who have issued this white paper with these proposals being made…..and now their own MPs don’t like it! Their ‘two council’ proposal also falls short of ALL the criteria, set out in the paper.
Let those MPs who have signed this ludicrous letter know Gloucestershire must stay together. Clue is in the name - UNITARY meaning one, singular!!!
This is not a debate about if scrapping these councils is a good or bad idea, the government have already made that decision.
Sign this petition if you’re one of the thousands of local people who DO NOT want to see Gloucestershire carved up in two!
One Gloucestershire must remain for us all.
There was no consultation from these 5/7 Gloucestershire MPs before they sent this ‘request’ They have not consulted with the people they apparently represent.
Sign this petition now - let the government know this is NOT the way forward, carving Gloucestershire in two!
