For those who live and work on the Island:

We all want a safe and harmonious neighborhood. Bay Island holds a very special place in our hearts. These speed tables will undoubtably have immeasurable impacts on our community. Unfortunately, many residents have been left out of the process and are feeling quite blindsided.

Please help petition our elected officials to stop the proposed speed tables and reassess options in a more public forum, capturing the whole neighborhood and not just a selected audience.  Allowing only the residents 100' from the tables to vote for the entire neighborhood is neither fair nor legal. The civic league has done a far from adequate job of engaging public comment on a project that so deeply affects all residents on the island.

Additionally, a study conducted by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), states that while speed tables can reduce average vehicle speeds in some scenarios, they lead to increased noise due to braking and acceleration near these installations. Emergency response times can be affected as well - an aspect that could potentially put lives at risk.

We desperately want increased traffic calming measures but believe alternative measures have not been sufficiently implemented or evaluated.   The proposed speed tables disproportionately affect certain residents and compromise emergency response times.  

Here are some important questions to consider on how we got here: Did you get an opportunity to vote on this project?  Was the City's due diligence made available to you?   Do you believe every effort was made to inform all residents of the project's timelines and milestones?

We urge our local officials to reconsider this project and explore alternative solutions that balance safety with accessibility for all vehicles and resident types.
