The Issue

Who is impacted?

Kina Nbisiing Debendaagziwaad - All the ones who belong to Nipissing. The proposed solar development on over 1,000 acres near Mukwa Miikan would destroy one of the last remaining traditional harvesting grounds in Nipissing First Nation. This land has sustained our Nation for generations — feeding our families and Elders, providing medicines, and nourishing our spirits through ceremonies and gatherings. It is home to wildlife whose travel routes and habitats are vital for a balanced ecosystem. The land holds our history, including ancestral burial sites that connect us to those who walked before us. If this land is lost, so is a central piece of our food sovereignty, cultural identity, and Nishnaabe way of life.

What is at stake?

This is not just about land — it’s about survival, tradition, and the future of our children and grandchildren. Once the land is clear-cut for solar panels, it will be gone forever. Our community will lose critical hunting territory along with community members’ hunt camps, medicinal plants, and sacred spaces. Without this land, we will soon have no where left to hunt on reserve.

Why act now?

Decisions about this project are being pushed forward rapidly without true community consultation. The engagement sessions held recently were information sessions, not meaningful dialogue - with a decision already made with council support and involvement. We need immediate action to stop this project and reconsider its location before irreversible damage is done. For the next seven generations, we must protect the land that has always provided life. Our ancestors cared for this land so we could enjoy it today — now it’s our turn to stand up and do the same.

We call on Nipissing First Nation Chief and Council to:

 1. Stop ALL development plans for this solar project (as well as any other projects that involve the loss of land) and find another location.

 2. Conduct a genuine and thorough consultation process with NFN members

 3. Protect Mukwa Miikan and surrounding harvesting grounds for present and future generations.

The Land. The People. The Future. Let’s live up to those words
