Stop the smoke shop opening near a Clifton school bus stop

The Issue

Every morning, I walk past the school bus stop on Main Ave in Clifton, NJ, and see numerous children gathered there, waiting for their bus to begin another day of learning. That spot has always been a staple of our community—a peaceful haven for families where children can wait safely. Recently, however, plans have been unveiled to open a smoke shop directly next to this busy bus stop; plans which threaten the sanctity and safety of our neighborhood.

This isn't merely a matter of proximity. It's a matter of community standards, child safety, and public health. The smoke shop's very nature means that marijuana smoke and its smell could potentially envelop an area frequented by our most vulnerable citizens—our children. Exposure to these substances at such a young age could have detrimental effects on their health and development. With studies showing the harmful impacts of secondhand smoke—ranging from respiratory infections to hindered lung development—there's a legitimate concern about having this smoke shop positioned so closely to where children gather.

Beyond the immediate health concerns, a smoke shop in this location threatens to erode the community atmosphere we've worked hard to maintain. Clifton has always prided itself on being a quiet, family-friendly area. Many residents have already expressed fear about the potential consequences of this development. A store like this could usher in unwanted traffic, change the neighborhood's dynamic, and most importantly, compromise the safety and wellbeing of our children.

We understand the complexities of business and development. However, there are solutions that do not involve jeopardizing the wellbeing of our kids. We believe that relocating this smoke shop to a more suitable location—away from children and residential areas—would allow businesses to thrive without infringing upon our neighborhood’s values.

We urge Clifton's city leaders and community planners to reconsider the location of this smoke shop. We respectfully ask that a new site be designated further from the school bus stop and residential zones. Let’s ensure that our children continue to have a safe, healthy place to wait for their school bus—and that our neighborhood retains its cherished family-friendly feel.

Please sign this petition to ask the local authorities to relocate the proposed smoke shop away from Main Ave's busy school bus stop. Your signature can help us create a safer, healthier, and better future for our children and our community.
