Petition updateStop the mass slaughter of dolphins by the fishing industry in EU watersDangerous time of year for short-beaked common dolphins

December to March is a dangerous time of year for short-beaked common dolphins. This is when fleets of supertrawlers target pelagic fish species aggregating to spawn off the west coast of the UK and Ireland. Short-beaked common dolphins also gather in huge numbers to feed on these fish, putting them at risk of lethal interactions with these vessels.

In previous years record numbers of dolphins have washed up on the UK and Irish coasts. Entanglement in fishing nets is the prime suspect in many of these deaths. There is no reason to believe 2019 will be any different.

Blue planet Society will be monitoring the situation and reporting on developments during this crucial period. We will keep you updated.
