I witnessed a heartbreaking scene on social media. A man herding baby calves into a trailer–their destination, slaughter. The mother cow, wracked with pain and heartbreak, chased after the trailer carrying her young away. The image haunted me. I saw fear and desperation, emotions we too often forget animals feel. Cattle are sentient beings, and we, as humans, inflict unimaginable suffering upon them especially in the veal industry.

Over 700,000 calves are used in the veal industry annually in the US, torn from their mothers shortly after birth (Source: American Veterinary Medical Association). The inherent cruelty and complete disregard for the emotional and physical well-being of these calves is abhorrent. This is the business of veal, a business where life is traded for profit.
