Stop the sale of tobacco mix products to minors in India

Stop the sale of tobacco mix products to minors in India
The Issue
India has tragically become one of the leading countries in the world for cancer cases, with tobacco products being a major contributing factor to this crisis. As a concerned citizen and a witness to the devastating effects of these products, I feel it’s time to wake up and take action. Our streets, schools, and neighborhoods in India see minors accessing dangerous products such as Pan Masala, Gutkaa, and other tobacco mix items readily available in retail shops.
The reality is alarming. According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2016-17, around 28.6% of India's population consumes tobacco, with a significant percentage being underage. This accessibility is setting up our youth for a future plagued by addiction and health complications, including cancer. There’s an urgent need for the Indian government to enforce and tighten regulations on the sale of these harmful products, especially to minors.
The existing laws are insufficient. More stringent controls, such as mandatory age verification systems and heavy penalties for retailers who sell to minors, should be implemented. Some states have attempted to control this menace through bans, but loopholes and lack of nationwide consistency weaken these efforts.
To tackle this issue comprehensively, collaboration between government bodies, non-profits, community leaders, and citizens is essential. Public awareness campaigns, educational programs in schools, and advertising bans are also pivotal to dissuade youth consumption of tobacco products.
Sign this petition to urge the Indian government to establish stricter, unified regulations against the sale of Pan Masala, Gutkaa, and tobacco mix products to minors. Let’s protect our children and create a healthier, safer future for the generations to come. Your signature can be the spark for change.
