The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing discussions to sell the Carmi Wastewater Treatment Plant to a private entity. This decision, if finalized, would have significant implications for our community, including skyrocketing water bills and the possible establishment of a massive data center on the edge of town. As a resident, I believe it is crucial for us to keep our essential services under public control to ensure fair pricing, operational accountability, and community-driven management. Privatizing our wastewater treatment facility is a risky move. Numerous examples from across the country demonstrate that when utilities are sold off to private companies, one of the first changes is a sharp increase in consumer rates. A study by Food & Water Watch found that private water utilities charge 59% more than publicly-owned ones. Meanwhile, when these companies try to maximize profits, the quality of service often deteriorates. Beyond the financial implications, the transfer to a private entity may lead to the creation of a large data center. While this may seem like an economic opportunity, it's important to recognize the environmental and community impacts such a facility could bring. Data centers require vast amounts of water and energy, potentially depleting our local resources and increasing pollution. This is a price our town should not have to pay. Instead, let us explore options that can improve the efficiency of our existing plant and invest in sustainable water management practices. Public ownership means all of us have a say in decisions that affect our lives. Our community must prioritize environmental responsibility, fiscal prudence, democratic governance, and transparency.    I call upon the Carmi City Council to halt any current sale discussions and consider the long-term welfare of our residents. My fellow neighbors, your voice matters in this critical decision-making process. Stand with me by signing this petition to stop the sale of the Carmi Wastewater Treatment Plant. Let's protect our community from unwarranted financial burdens and safeguard our environment from industrial overreach. We have the power to decide the future of our town—make it count.
