Stop the sale of fireworks to the public
The Issue
I’m reaching out to all of you with a heavy heart, as a fellow animal lover. Year after year, I witness the distress suffered by my beloved pets and those of my neighbours and many more around the country, due to the random and unrelenting fireworks set off around November 5th. The deafening noise from fireworks doesn't just echo in our ears for a fleeting moment—our pets, with their incredibly sensitive hearing, endure tormenting stress, anxiety, and fear. This is especially painful for me, as I have always been a devoted caretaker of dogs, and seeing them suffer tears me apart.
Just recently, a tragic incident occurred in my own neighbourhood—a friend's terrified dog bolted from their garden during a barrage of fireworks and was tragically struck by a car and died. This heartbreaking event is not an isolated incident; countless animals are lost or injured during this season. Statistics show that animal shelters report a significant increase in lost pets during firework periods due to fear-induced bolting.
Unfortunately, pets aren't the only victims. Wildlife is also gravely affected. Birds have been known to flee their nests, unable to return due to disorientation, leaving young ones vulnerable. Research highlights the profound auditory impact fireworks have on animals, hearing at levels far more acute than humans. And while many of us enjoy a quick, colourful spectacle in the night sky, the chaos left in its wake is often overlooked.
A sensible solution would be to prohibit the public sale of fireworks and instead encourage professionally organized displays. This approach can drastically reduce the number of random explosions disturbing our pets' peace, and maintain the festivities in a controlled, predictable manner. By limiting fireworks to specific community events, we can strike a balance between celebration and compassion.
Let's stand together to change the way we celebrate. By signing this petition, you are voicing a call for compassion over chaos, support for controlled celebrations, and a commitment to safeguard our beloved pets and wildlife. Let’s work towards a solution that allows us to enjoy November festivities without sacrificing animal welfare. Please, sign this petition to help protect our animals from the needless suffering caused by fireworks. Thank you for your support.
