The UK government has chosen to rely on voluntary initiatives to reduce food waste in the UK, but they haven't been delivering ambitious enough change to really cut food waste in half by 2030. Last year, the Stop the Rot campaign focussed on trying to win a more ambitious voluntary agreement to end UK food waste - WRAP's Courtauld 2025. Your pressure helped achieve some vital wins - the mountains of food wasted on farms were included, and the target was more ambitious than before. But the targets fell short of the ambition desparately needed, because with voluntary agreements you have to dilute your ambition in order to get businesses to sign up, and no guarantee they'll live up to their word. But the UK government refuses to act. But there is hope! Europe is on the cusp of agreeing the Circular Economy Package, which would set a binding target for all EU member states to halve their food waste by 2030! And it would hold businesses to account, which is essential because up to 59% of Europe's food waste comes before it even gets to the consumer, and some businesses waste more in a day than a consumer does in a year! Vitally, it would also come into UK law before we leave the EU (though nothing is certain with Brexit). And the UK government will have a fight on their hands if they later try to repeal this. So this could be our last chance! This Is Rubbish, the organisation behind Stop the Rot, have mobilised a massive movement across the EU to halve Europe's food waste! 38 organisations from across 15 countries and over 35,000 people have supported us so far.
