A big victory in the fight against food waste! Scotland have brought in a fantastic new food waste target, one of the most ambitious in the world. Well done Scotland - let's hope the UK follows suit!
Stop the Rot gave advice to the Scottish government about these targets, to ensure that they were ambitious and didn't contain the same ambiguities and loopholes some other targets have done. We're delighted to see the results, and wouldn’t have been able to do this without your amazing support, so thank you all! Stop the Rot will be pressing for these to become regulatory targets in 2016 (they may remain voluntary), so we will keep you posted throughout the year.
In other updates, the government whip unfortunately objected to Kerry McCarthy’s Food Waste Reduction Bill going forward to committee stage without a debate. There may be more action possible on this around June time after the Private Members Bill ballot – we’ll keep you posted. The actions you took last time were massively helpful, with over 2000 letters sent in support.
Also, thank you for all your pressure in the run up to our meetings with Sainsbury’s and Tesco. As yet neither have agreed to concrete changes, but we are making progress - we’ll be having more meetings with the supermarkets soon and will keep you posted on how you can keep the pressure up!
In the meantime, please share our petition far and wide to boost support!
