Dear food waste warriors, Morrisons recently made the great announcement that they will become the first UK retailer to redistribute all of the food waste from their stores to charities. A petition earlier this year was instrumental in achieving this – great news, and proof that people power is driving change! But in-store waste is only the tip of the ice berg. Food waste occurring in the supermarket itself is just 0.25 tonnes of the 7 million tonnes wasted in supermarket supply chains. Yet supermarket policy has a huge affect on their suppliers – as we saw in Stop the Rot supporter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s programme last night, like the Morrisons supplier and parsnip farmer featured who had to waste mountains of his crop because they were slightly the wrong size or shape. And Morrisons directly own a lot more of their supply chain than the other supermarkets, so they’re uniquely placed to make the change. Help us call on Morrisons to tackle their supply chain food waste, on their farms and factories! If we all tweet at Morrisons, then they’ll feel the pressure to change – just tweet @Morrisons using the hashtag #stoptherot, and let’s create a Twitterstorm! Here’s an example tweet below: @Morrisons Congrats on donating your in-store food waste! Now tackle your supply chain food waste too! #stoptherot change.org/stoptherot Over and Sprout, Rosie Boycott and the Stop the Rot team
