Stop the Relocation of Stonehaven Library

Stop the Relocation of Stonehaven Library

The Issue

Why Stonehaven Must Act Now

Stonehaven and District Community Council, on behalf of the town, is acting because residents already understand what relocation would mean.

Our central library, which has evolved over many generations into a welcoming, much‑loved and truly treasured community space, may not be closing — but moving it into an unfit converted office would weaken it bit by bit until it fades away. Losing its dedicated town‑centre building would be a loss beyond measure.

Aberdeenshire Council has already agreed in principle and in policy to relocate the library. Unless residents act now, the heart of our town risks being changed forever without a meaningful public say.

More than 220 residents attended the Council’s recent “Engagement Exercise” expecting a formal consultation, only to find an informal picture‑board display that left many feeling their views were not being fully captured.

With no clear alternative route for residents to express their views, the future of the library and its town‑centre building is now in immediate jeopardy.

Stonehaven and District Community Council believes the community must act before the decision becomes impossible to reverse.

This petition gives Stonehaven residents a united platform to call on Aberdeenshire Council to retain the library in its central, accessible location; to work collaboratively with local groups; to explore creative new uses for the existing building; and to consider a Community Asset Transfer to secure its long‑term future.

What We Are Asking For

We, the undersigned, call on Aberdeenshire Council to:
•     Retain Stonehaven Library in its existing town‑centre location
•     Work collaboratively with Stonehaven and District Community Council, the Stonehaven Town Partnership, and the Stonehaven Business Association
•     Jointly identify new and creative ways the current building could be used to serve an even wider range of community and business needs

Why Your Voice Matters

Stonehaven and District Community Council believes that the future of this much‑loved building should be shaped openly, constructively, and in partnership with the community it serves. By adding your name, you help demonstrate how strongly Stonehaven values its library and its place at the heart of our town.
