A quick update to let you know that we seem to be getting closer to a Council decision on the City of Subiaco’s Civic Precinct project.

The staff reply to a recent public question indicated that a report will be presented at a Council meeting before the end of this year. There are only two Ordinary Council meetings left - on 24 November and 15 December. The agenda for the November meeting is likely to be published on Friday the 13th.

When staff submit a report, it will contain their recommendations, which are put to the vote at the Council meeting. Councillors are given the opportunity to speak for or against. Sometimes, a procedural motion is put forward. If passed, this can defer consideration of the item until a later date. Also, Councillors may propose amendments or alternatives to what the staff recommend. So, it may or may not be straightforward.

Whether it’s at the 24 November (which seems likely) or the 15 December meeting, a decision on the project and the fate of our beautiful Rankin Gardens is not far away.

If there is a revised design put forward and approved for a new building, the place will be a building site for several years. That would be very sad indeed.

However, all hope is not lost! You can still express your concerns by filling in the City’s latest survey and providing comments - see the link below (deadline is 9 November 2026):

There is also the chance to ask public questions or make a public statement at a Council meeting if you are a community member. See the City’s website under Attending a Meeting of Council for the rules.

Thank you for your continuing support. I’ll keep you posted.
