I came across a timely article by horticultural expert Sabrina Hahn about the cooling and other benefits of lawn.
The photo is an extract from her article in The West Australian newspaper on 7 November 2025. It makes interesting reading.
The council’s plans show most of the lawn areas in and around Rankin Gardens and along Rokeby Road being replaced by concrete paving. With less water getting into the earth, what will happen to the majestic Norfolk Island Pines? Will they survive? Will any of the other trees survive?
I also wonder about the fire risk of replacing exotic, evergreen or deciduous trees with WA natives such as eucalypts, corimbias and the like in a confined area. Eucalyptus trees contain volatile oils. I have personal experience of seeing jarrah and marri tree branches catch alight even when their leaves are wet.
I only have one week left to gather signatures so please keep sharing this petition.
Once again, my sincere thanks for your support.
