Stop the public sale of fireworks
The Issue
For years, I have been deeply concerned about the sale of fireworks to the public. It's a conversation that keeps popping up on the Next Door app and in discussions with friends and family.
The misuse of fireworks is not just an issue of noise; it represents a wider problem affecting our communities. Unplanned and unchecked firework displays lead to chaos: they scare our pets, disrupt wildlife, and cause distress to vulnerable individuals such as children with sensory sensitivities and veterans with PTSD.
Domestic animals, especially dogs and cats, face immense stress during fireworks. Many pet owners report their animals hiding for days, refusing to eat, or even trying to escape. The loud bangs are nothing short of terrifying for them, causing trauma and sometimes physical harm. Wildlife, too, suffers massive disruptions; birds are found nesting in different areas or worse, injured from fright-induced collisions.
It's time for change. Let's advocate for organised community-oriented firework displays, offering a controlled environment where trained professionals can minimize risks and harm. This would not only continue a cherished tradition but would do so more responsibly and inclusively. No longer would we need to brace ourselves for the unpredictable nights buzzing with unsupervised explosions.
Together, we need to rethink our approach and prioritise safety over convenience. I urge you to join us in asking local governments to ban the public sale of fireworks and to support organised displays managed by experts. Safety, harmony, and the integrity of our community are paramount.
Please sign this petition to help implement regulations that will protect our pets, wildlife, and vulnerable neighbors while still allowing us all to enjoy the beauty of fireworks responsibly.
