The Issue

To: The U.S. Department of Defense and Relevant Authorities

We, the Center for Economic and Social Justice (CESJ), along with concerned citizens worldwide, urge you to halt the public execution of Nidal Hasan.

Only three nations now have public executions: Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea.  The United States risks aligning itself with authoritarian regimes and terrorist states.

We believe in the absolute, inherent dignity of every human person.  This dictates no matter how serious someone’s crimes, the government must never turn justice into a barbaric public show.

A public execution does not serve justice but promotes a culture of death that harms society.  It violates ethics, social order, and human rights standards by brutalizing society.  It exposes the public, particularly children, to violence, makes people less sensitive to cruelty, incite violence and create security, riot, and public safety risks.
