Stop the Pub Development at 167-173 Rowe Street, Eastwood! (LDA2025/0012)
The issue
“Oppose the Development Application for a Pub on Rowe Street, Eastwood (LDA2025/0012) – Protect Our School and Family-Friendly Community”
We call on the City of Ryde Council to reject Development Application LDA2025/0012 and oppose the establishment of a pub at 167-173 Rowe Street, Eastwood.
We, the school community of Eastwood (including parents, teachers, and school staff), strongly oppose the proposed development of a pub at 167-173 Rowe Street, Eastwood. The pub is planned to operate until 2:00 AM daily with a capacity of 300 people, and its proximity to schools and residential areas will have a severe negative impact on our community.
"Our key concerns include:"
1. "Disruption to Student and Family Life"
- The late-night operation of the pub will increase anti-social behavior, noise, and safety risks, negatively affecting the daily lives of students and families.
2. "Noise Pollution and Impact on Study Environments"
- Noise from the pub, especially during late-night hours, will disturb students’ ability to study and rest, potentially harming their academic performance and well-being.
3. "Safety Concerns for Young People"
- The presence of a pub near schools and residential areas poses safety risks for students traveling to and from school or extracurricular activities, particularly due to potential alcohol-related incidents.
4. "Negative Influence on Young People"
- A pub in the heart of Eastwood sends the wrong message to young people, normalizing alcohol consumption and increasing exposure to unhealthy behaviors.
5. "Loss of Family-Oriented Spaces"
- Replacing existing family-friendly businesses (such as restaurants and supermarkets) with a pub eliminates essential community spaces that cater to families and children.
6. "Opposition to Gaming Machines"
- While gaming machines are not part of this application, we strongly oppose their potential introduction, as they normalize gambling and pose risks to young people.
We urge the City of Ryde Council to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and families by rejecting this development application. Let’s preserve Eastwood as a family-friendly neighborhood.
