As somebody deeply tied to the culture and history of Hawaii, the proposed bill to redesign the Hae Hawai’i (Hawaiian) flag - now having passed its first reading at the Hawaii State Legislature - has struck a personal chord. Our beloved flag, an integral part of my identity and the identity of all Hawaiians, is not just a piece of cloth. It's a living testament to our history, our struggles, and our resilience. It was thoughtfully designed by King Kamehameha I himself, where every line, every color, the Union Jack, and the number of stripes are laden with meaning. This is more than just a flag; it's the embodiment of our unique Hawaiian spirit, our rich cultural heritage, and our undying connection with the land we come from. It's not something to be redesigned lightly; it carries a cultural significance that we all hold dearly in our hearts, minds, bodies and souls. Imposing a redesign dilutes these significant symbols and erodes our unique identity. Let's stand firm together against this bill, as a community, and preserve our history from being rewritten.
