Apparently, 'sewage monitors at some popular seaside destinations in England and Wales are faulty or not installed, Environment Agency data has revealed, meaning people could be swimming in human waste this summer without realising.'

Great. It makes you despair. If the government aren't interested in protecting the country's waterways and coasts, if they're not interested in children swimming in contaminated water, if they're not interested in the impact on wildlife in the country they claim to love so deeply, it doesn't bode well for them being much interested in anything at all - except protecting profit and abdicating responsibility.

It was a wearying sight to see on social media yesterday so many photos of MPs who had voted to allow the discharge of raw sewage into our seas and rivers.  People are angry.  Rightly so.

There's so much that is under threat. The intention to sell-off Channel 4 is part of a much larger pattern of disregard and failure of responsibility. The arts: under threat, independent programming: under threat, independent news + investigative journalism: under threat,  the NHS: under threat. The list is long.

We're heading into recession and a cost of living crisis. We are under threat from the prospect of fuel poverty and so much more.

These are serious times, we need serious politicians who are working in our best interests.

The only thing being 'unleashed' at the moment - for all their talk - is a deluge of sewage into our rivers and seas.

Please keep signing + sharing. It doesn't have to be this way.

Once Channel 4 is gone, it's gone.  Apart from anything:

we really need independent news and journalism at times like these.
