Stop the Naturalist Training at California's Contaminated Santa Susana Field Lab

The Issue

As a parent of a two-time cancer survivor child, I am frightened and angry about a greenwashing ploy that can expose unknowing nature lovers in Los Angeles to a toxic and radioactive site, the Santa Susana Field Lab.

A Reuters Report found that eighty children in my community have been diagnosed with pediatric cancer, and I believe that the contamination at the Santa Susana Field Lab is the root of the problem. Independent studies have proven how dangerous the site is to human health, even from small, one-time exposures.

The Boeing Company, which owns most of the Santa Susana Field Lab, has hired PR teams, lobbyists, and lawyers to greenwash the site to make it seem safe. It's not. The soil and groundwater at the site are polluted with endocrine-disrupting chemicals, toxic metals, and radioactive fallout. Boeing doesn't want to pay for the complete cleanup. Greenwashing is cheaper, plus their lies make them look like environmental heroes. It's a win-win for them and a lose-lose for us.

And now the California Department of Parks and Recreation is using taxpayer dollars to help perpetuate Boeing's greenwashing lies to the public, putting nature lovers at risk of harm!

In a letter, our grassroots group has already nicely asked the California Department of Parks and Recreation to stop cooperating in these naturalist trainings at the Santa Susana Field Lab. Their participation in the program makes it seem like the site is safe when it's clearly not. We reminded them that the nearby state and local parks are beautiful, free, and aren't toxic or radioactive. They told us no. They've already put out invitations for next year's classes, starting in January 2025.

We don't want our public tax dollars used toward Boeing's smokescreen for corporate irresponsibility that's giving our kids cancer and polluting our environment. We don't want nature lovers exposed to toxic or radioactive contamination because they weren't warned that the site is dangerous.

Please sign our petition asking the California Department of Parks and Recreation to stand by our community, prioritize human health, and protect the environment over corporate interest by immediately ceasing to participate in all events at the Santa Susana Field Lab.
