The hate, the division, the content that leaves people anxious, angry and afraid: it is not a glitch. It is a business model. The most powerful companies on earth have read their own research. They have decided the harm is worth it, because outrage keeps people scrolling and the money keeps flowing.
This week the Prime Minister announced a ban on social media for under-16s. It is a genuine step. But it leaves the machine behind it untouched. The adult is still exposed. Our democracy is still exposed.
There is one simple step the government could take that would change the rules of the game overnight.
Platforms behave like publishers. They curate content like publishers. They profit like publishers. But the law refuses to treat them as publishers. Close that gap, make platforms legally liable for what they publish, promote and profit from, and the calculation changes entirely. The content engineered to divide and damage suddenly carries a cost.
It shouldn't be left to courageous individuals and grieving families to hold Big Tech to account. Not when one change in the law could do it.
We know it can be done. They said making lying in politics a crime was impossible. We drafted the bill. Wales passed it. The same is possible here.
When MPs, peers and academics sign a letter, government can read it and move on. When thousands of names sit behind it, it becomes much harder to ignore.
