Over the last 24 hours our CEO, Jennifer Nadel, has been hitting the airwaves to explain what the Angela Rayner story reveals about the way politics is done in Britain today.

During the course of three national radio interviews Jennifer has reminded listeners that women from working-class backgrounds too often face disproportionate criticism, whilst also pointing out that the real issue runs deeper than this individual crisis.

Westminster’s adversarial, combative culture is a system designed for point-scoring and put-downs, not for solving problems.

Those who make mistakes can avoid or delay taking ownership of a mistake for fear of the political fallout it will have on the whole of their party. As a result, ministers are wheeled out to double down on narratives that later turn out to be incorrect. It’s no wonder that voters’ trust in politicians is at such a terrible low.

Jennifer has spoken about the need for:

  • Compassion in how we treat those under scrutiny.
  • Accountability and honesty from those in positions of power.
  • A complete shift in political culture, away from aggression and towards honesty and collaboration.

Her most recent interview was with LBC News and you can listen to it here.

This is exactly why Compassion in Politics exists. Together, we are working to build a new kind of politics — one that values empathy, fairness and responsibility, and that genuinely serves the people it represents.

Thanks to your support we are able to advocate for the reform and modernisation that our current political situation desperately needs. And, to call out the media’s often hostile portrayal of women in positions of power,

The issues run deeper than one individual crisis and they reinforce the case we are making to the Government that urgent systemic change is needed to make politics and parliament fit for the challenges of the 21st Century.
