Stop the Mass Layoffs at ODOT – Protect Oregon’s Roads, Workers, and Communities
The Issue
Governor Tina Kotek and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) have announced plans to lay off nearly 500 public employees and shut down 16 maintenance stations across the state — the largest layoff in the agency's history.
These cuts are not just numbers — they are the people who plow our roads in winter storms, repair critical infrastructure, and keep our communities connected and safe. Without them, Oregon faces longer emergency response times, deteriorating road conditions, and serious public safety risks — especially in rural areas.
This crisis is the result of a long-term funding shortfall due to declining gas tax revenue, higher construction costs, and increased electric vehicle use — not because these workers failed to do their jobs. They are being punished for systemic problems outside their control.
We, the undersigned, call on Governor Kotek, ODOT leadership, and state lawmakers to:
Pause all layoffs immediately
Secure emergency funding to maintain current staffing levels
Explore sustainable, long-term transportation funding solutions that do not sacrifice essential public services or working families
These workers are the backbone of our state's transportation system. Letting them go will have devastating, lasting consequences for Oregon’s economy, safety, and environment.
Stand with ODOT workers. Stand with Oregon. Sign this petition today.
