Dear Friends
Thank you to everyone who attended our rally last night. About 150 residents, friends and supporters gathered in Altona and marched to the Civic Centre, clapping and singing together. Your solidarity means the world to us.
Hobsons Bay City Council cancelled its in-person meeting ahead of our peaceful march, and only selectively responded to the community’s questions about the Techno Park eviction via Zoom.
Council administration rejected Councillor Daria Kellander's motion to rescind the eviction notices, so it wasn’t even tabled for discussion at the meeting.
In the lead-up to the meeting, Mayor Tony Briffa issued a statement that many of us found misleading. We promptly responded to clarify the facts and ensure our voices were accurately represented.
All of this is unfolding during Homelessness Week. This time is meant to raise awareness of the impacts of homelessness on people’s lives, and the solutions needed to end it. Meanwhile, our council is trying to remove people from their own homes.
Hobsons Bay City Council has underestimated the care, compassion, and depth of commitment our community has for one another. The more than 12,500 signatures on our petition show this care extends far and wide.
We urge the council to reconsider its stance, engage in open dialogue, and work towards a solution that respects the rights and dignity of Techno Park residents.
Melissa Horne MP, neighbouring councillors, and Hobsons Bay Councillor Daria Kellander are advocating for a just outcome for Techno Park residents.
To date, no other Hobson Bay Councillor, including Labor and Greens, is supporting us to stay in our homes.
Thanks to your support, our story has garnered significant media attention, including coverage in The Age, Herald Sun, and Star Weekly. Together, we are showing decision makers that the community cares about keeping people in their homes.
Can you help us reach 15,000 signatures by sharing the petition?
Please reach out to us at techno.park.residents@gmail.com or via Facebook if you have any suggestions or would like to help in any other way.
Thank you.
