According to the Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme, homeowners at Techno Park could “legally” use their homes for purposes such as:

• Convenience shops
• Crop raising
• Grazing animal production
• Informal outdoor recreation
• A mail centre
• Shipping container storage
• A railway or tramway.

Techno Park homes were built to be homes. They are not suitable for the purposes listed above.

More likely, if residents left their homes at Techno Park, the blocks of units would sit vacant. Public health risks associated with vacant buildings include crime: such as theft, arson, rubbish dumping and assaults; and neighbourhood blight. Given the desperate need for housing, it is also possible that other people would simply move in.
